About the Artist

Born in Milngavie, Glasgow, in 1956, Millar discovered her passion for painting early life, winning a scholarship in Harrogate in the early 1970s. She initially trained at Harrogate School of Art, then later resumed formal art education at Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen. Her final degree show was a huge success, selling out within hours and proving Millar to be an incredible new artistic voice. In October 2006, she came to the attention of Charles Saatchi (renowned art collector) with her first solo exhibition, propelling her into wider recognition. Millar’s immediate success led to exhibitions across the United Kingdom, notably including displays at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh. In 2007, The Sunday Herald ranked her amongst Scotland’s top five most collectable artists. Since then, she has been exhibiting her work internationally, with it being admired throughout Europe, the Far East, Australia and America. Catriona Millar’s paintings speak a universal language to all ages and to the many others who have studied her work. Millar’s style is instantly recognisable, with figurative compositions that are rich in colour, layered patterns and heavily textured. She works with a palette knife, applying thick layers of paint to the canvas to achieve a surface that draws the viewer deep into the piece. Her work captures the human condition, resonating with joy, hope, longing, and melancholy. Her figures, often female are occasionally joined by animals, which enhances a certain symbolic meaning and narrative depth. Her imagery teems with stories, inviting the viewer to interpret their own meanings from her paintings. Millar primarily chooses to paint in oil with a palette knife, which adds an almost sculptural quality to her work, creating thick strokes in the composition. She paints in the rural Scottish countryside, where she is surrounded by portraits of relatives, neighbours and teachers- often inspiration for her work. Curators and collectors underscore the power underneath Millar’s work. Homes and Interiors note Millar’s ‘remarkable colour and pattern,’ whilst former V &A curator remarks on Millar’s ability to portray ‘the full spectrum of the human condition.’ Her paintings are embraced by private collectors and public institutions globally. They appear on book jackets and CD covers, and Millar is often studied in art schools worldwide. She is also listed in Who’s Who in Scotland, reflective of her cultural importance within the Scottish arts. Millar continues to paint daily, driven to portray people and pattern. She is a modern storyteller using the means of painting, her canvases speak to nostalgia, humanity and connection.
