Our Projects
At Dementia Arts we are always looking for new ways to reach out to people further afield. We are working behind the scenes to ensure we can spread joy through art to even more people within the community.

Art in a Suitcase
Our classes have been developed and fully tested over the past 10 years in both our studios, in care homes and in community settings. Our fully trained, compassionate teachers use our Art in A Suitcase product to deliver structured art classes to people living with dementia and the most vulnerable in our society. Each class has a Dementia Arts teacher and assistant. A staff member – usually Activities Coordinator – is always present during our visits and an official relationship agreement is signed by both parties prior to our first class. Classes are highly structured with easily recognisable subject matters and the painting is developed over a number of easy to follow stages. Strong, contrasting colours and quality art materials are used and the finished picture is mounted and signed. Each class lasts an hour with a maximum of 8 participants (plus any carers). Over our ten years of experience in running classes, we’ve recognised ways to make our sessions as inclusive, comfortable and dementia-friendly as possible.
• Hour long classes. We see most focus from participants last around an hour. Any longer can be a strain on the participant and they can become tired.
• Red mats. Each participant is given a red mat, on which to place a white piece of watercolour paper. This creates a strong contrast against a white table.
• A choice of two designs. We carry two sets of design guides in our suitcase. For many participants, they are happy to follow our general design and add their own creative touch. For the more experienced artist, we have an option a little more challenging! The subject will remain the same to encourage conversation and inclusion.
• Limiting items on tables. We know that a busy environment can cause confusion and distraction so we limit the items on tables when setting up. This includes colour choices. It can become overwhelming when to many options are presented.
• Choice of medium. Our quality watercolour pencils hold heavy paint pigment in them, so a little can go a long way. This means that people who struggle with applying pressure to the paper can still add colour. We only need a small amount of water so the whole process is generally mess free.
• Lots of encouragement! There is no wrong art or any kind of artistic constraints with us. We encourage personal touches and love to nurture unique styles. We truly believe that every finished piece of art is beautiful in its own way.
Home Grown Memories
Our dementia-friendly activity packs “Homegrown Memories” are designed to tap into the benefits of our classes. Filled with creative materials, these boxes offer a range of activities that can spark memories, evoke emotions, and foster a sense of purpose. By focusing on individual’s interests and abilities, these boxes empower people living with dementia to continue to express themselves and connect with others. The box contains all materials needed for each activity including watercolour pencils, paper, paintbrush, pencil, rubber and sharpener. We include our unique step-by-step guide sheets to complete 3 pieces of artwork in our scaffolded approach. The box also features the “Tree of Life”, a creative exercise to encourage the participant to reflect on their life, identifying what is important to them. We include prompt cards with images and questions to stimulate memories and discussions with loved ones.
