About the Artist
Peter Foyle grew up amidst the pastoral beauty of Dorset, where as a child he was often spotted cycling the countryside with an easel and paints strapped to his bike, painting ‘en plein air’ and seizing inspiration from the local landscape. His early passion to create earned Peter various awards and a reputation even before formal art training. Foyle studied illustration at St Martin’s School of Art, London, where he graduated in 1986. That same year, he became a finalist in the esteemed Readers Digest Young Illustrators Award, foreshadowing his future success as an artist. In 1990, Peter relocated to Ayrshire, where he and his wife opened the Framework Gallery in Troon, a space which serves as a professional gallery. Peter’s work spans multiple European locations, notably Venetian canals, cafes in Provence, and Scottish coastlines. When describing his work, Peter states he sees ‘his work as drawings in paint, working quickly and freely across the whole canvas… conveying an impression of the atmosphere and light.’ Instead of focussing on detailed and accurate depiction of the subject, his work is softly atmospheric. His use of oil on Belgian linen enhances that atmosphere, bringing organic texture and an expressive surface to the paintings. Peter’s talent has been internationally acclaimed. He was a Finalist in the Readers Digest Young Illustrator’s award, Recipient of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians Award at the Glasgow Institute, and has had exhibitions in multiple galleries in Scotland and abroad- including China. His work elevates the mundane; cafes, boats and everyday objects are transported into compositions illuminated by light, emotion and nostalgia. Peter Foyle’s paintings are more than decorative, capturing sensitivity, atmosphere and incredible lightness in his landscapes.
